Tick tock, tick tock said the clock... Short Story

Once upon a time in a small town, lived a hard working family named the Liverdales.

The Liverdales were a family of 5 members. Mr. and Ms. Liverdale who had 3 sons: Joseph the oldest, Mathieu in the middle, and Charles who was the youngest.

Mr. and Ms. Liverdale struggled through the years to bring up their sons on one minimum wage, for Mr. Liverdale was a carpenter and every day he would wake up early to go to work where he would build wooden treasures with his own two hands. Unfortunately in such a small town the humble people that lived there were incapable of giving more than a small reward for Mr. Liverdales hard work. Never the less, all year round Mr. Liverdale would accept what he was offered with a smile and put his small reward to good use to shelter his family.

Soon winter set in and Christmas was around the corner.

Mr. and Ms. Liverdale sat at the dinner table one cold night discussing how they would like to buy special gifts for their 3 sons this Christmas; but when they counted their last pennies they realized that there was only enough money left to buy two gifts and not a third. Ms. Liverdale was very upset by this and started to cry. She loved all her boys equally and did not want to leave any of her sons feeling left out. Mr. Liverdale who loved his wife very much, wiped her tears away and put the last remaining coins in her hand. He then said; “Take this money to town in the morning and go get two gifts.”

With one day left before Christmas Mr. Liverdale went to work with a plan to make enough money to buy the third gift.

All day long he sawed, cut, hammered, glued and sanded wood to make as many chairs, tables, cupboards, clocks and cradles as he could; and although he was able to sell most of his creations by the end of the day, his heart dropped when he looked at the one last remaining clock.

Mr. Liverdale got so caught up in his work that he had not realized the time go by. Looking out of his window he saw all the lights and doors in town were now closed. Everyone had closed early to spend Christmas-eve at home with their families; leaving Mr. Liverdale with money in his hand but no place to spend it.

Once Mr. Liverdale realized that he had had no other option but to head home, he picked up the last remaining clock, carved the initials C.L on the back of the clock and wrapped it up in a paper bag.

Finally arriving home, he found his family sitting by the Christmas tree waiting for their father.
Mr. Liverdale joined them at the side of the Christmas tree where Ms. Liverdale gave out gifts to her two older sons.
Carlo and Mathieu were bright eyed and smiling when they saw polished new toy cars made out of plastic and metal. Then the third and youngest son looked up at his father waiting for his Christmas gift…

Mr. Liverdale then pulled out from behind his back a paper bag wrapped package which he gave to his young son half heartily. Little Charles put the paper package to his ear where tick tock , tick tock said the clock…

The young boy unwrapped the package full of excitement to find the wooden clock his father had carved with his own hands. Charles then threw his little arms around his father’s neck and thanked him for giving him the best Christmas gift ever.

His father looking confused asked Charles why he liked the clock so much and how come he was not disappointed for not receiving a brand new toy same as his brothers?

Little Charles picked up the clock his father made him and said,
“Because you made time for me!”

THE END
